On this day showcases our  rich, symbolic language used to communicate profound messages about identity, history, values, and social status. These messages are conveyed through various forms, including traditional clothing (Kente, Adinkra), music and dance, festivals, and social etiquette.

Traditional Clothing and Adornments

  • Kente Cloth: Handwoven with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, Kente cloth (primarily associated with the Akan people, but now a national symbol) communicates the wearer’s social status, wealth, and the occasion for which it is worn. Each color and design carries specific symbolic meanings and proverbs relating to history and traditional wisdom.
  • Adinkra Symbols: These visual symbols, typically stamped onto cloth used for important occasions (especially funerals), function as a non-verbal illustration of proverbs, maxims, and philosophical concepts.
    • Sankofa (a bird with its head turned backward): “Return and take it” – a message to learn from the past.
    • Gye Nyame (except for God): Symbolizes the omnipotence of God.
    • Dwannimmen (ram’s horns): Signifies humility and strength.
  • Gold Ornaments and Beads: Worn by chiefs and individuals on special occasions, gold ornaments and beads signify wealth, prestige, and social status.

Music and Dance

  • Communication of Emotion and Intent: Traditional dances are a form of expression used to convey specific messages, which can range from joy and praise to warnings or insults, depending on the context (e.g., the Adowa dance).
  • Occasion-Specific Performances: Different ethnic groups have specific dances for different events, such as the Gome dance for the Homowo festival or certain dances performed at funerals, to educate and entertain.
  • Hospitality: Choirs and dance groups  perform to welcome visitors, an expression of hospitality and cultural pride.
